Course Requirements - Realtime Voice Academy

Course Requirements


    All Realtime Voice Academy candidates are required to take an entrance exam prior to enrollment.  The non-refundable fee for the exam is $40.

Realtime Voice Academy Prerequisites

          • Grammatical understanding of sentence structure, punctuation and spelling
          • Typing skills of at least 40 words per minute
          • Intermediate to advanced Windows skills
          • Understanding of computer hardware and software

This is a computer and software-intensive course.  
Students must be proficient in Windows 10.


Realtime Voice Academy does NOT provide any hardware or software.  
    All Realtime Voice Academy students must have a dedicated voice-writing laptop, Dragon 15 and EclipseVox Student software.  

LAPTOP SPECIFICATIONS:  i7 8th (or newer) generation quad-core processor; 16-32 gigs of RAM; a 500 GB (or larger) solid state hard drive; Windows 10.  Your laptop must meet these specifications to be adequate for voice writing. Make sure you have at least TWO USB PORTS.  More ports are better but make sure you have at least two.
These are minimum specifications.  Upgrades worth considering would be an i9 processor, 32 gigs of RAM and a terabyte solid state hard drive.

DRAGON PROFESSIONAL INDIVIDUAL 15.3 ONLY - NO ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS OR ADD-ONS ARE REQUIRED.
NOTE: It is recommended that you purchase the Dragon Installation and Training Flash Drive - 16 Gb USB 3 Flash drive containing any Dragon product full installation, Installation/Training Manuals for $35.

ECLIPSEVOX STUDENT SOFTWARE: Student software cannot be purchased until Advantage Software has proof of enrollment.
Eclipse (Computer Aided Transcription/CAT) use begins five weeks into the session.  $349 will be paid to Advantage Software AFTER classes start.  
Eclipse student software is NOT required until later in the course.
This is STUDENT software.    Upgrading will be necessary upon certification.

All online students must have a microphone headset to join online classes.

  • The Complete Court Reporter's Handbook and Guide for Realtime Writers (5th or 4th Edition)
    This book is no longer being published but it is a great resource if you can find a used one.
  • Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition

TRANSCRIPTION PEDAL: USB three pedal transcription pedal with ExpressScribe transcription software.
